Red sex link pullets in a cold climate area

Thread Starter

I will be increasing my flock size this spring and am considering Red Sex Links

My current flock consists of Buff  Orpingtons, Rhode Island Reds and Silver Laced Wyandottes which are all cold tolerant

I live in upstate NY where the winters can get long and cold

I have read that the Red Sex Links do not do well in cold areas which would be a problem

What are your experiences with the Red Sex Links in cold climates

Do you think they are a good fit for my area ?

Another option I am considering is getting Black Australorps which ARE cold tolerant

Thanks

Tom

I know that people around here keep red sex links (Golden Comets, Isa Browns, etc) without issues in my area, and it gets quite bitterly cold here in the winter.  Frostbite would be my biggest concern, but that would be true of any single-combed fowl.

Home of the world's cutest dachshund, one crazy blue heeler, two cats,
one fat pony, and many (but not too many!) chickens

Can anyone tell me, how many are too many chickens?

:welcome

The parent breeds of red sex links do well in cold climates, so the mixture will do fine also. You just need the same management as with any single combed bird....a good dry area is the most important.
