Ducklings and chicks... sand vs pine shavings for coop floor

We just got ducklings and chicks..... we had ducks before and used deep pine shavings.... when small and had water in duck house we would just stir it every day but would still have to change it weekly.... right now in the bigger and better coop we are still working on we have them to one side and using pine shavings then divided part for water mess with sweet pdz....working like a charm.... my question is... once coop work is complete I'm thinking about doing all sand....as this i think would be great for cleaning but not sure if the ducks would like it.... any suggestions?
Regardless definitely going to use sand/sweet PDZ for water area.... Also another question is can i use ag lime and mix it with sand.... sweet PDZ is hard to find unless going out of town and lime is less expensive.
