I have a young chicken, about 16 months old, and she has died from a shock. A story to long to go into here, but the shock was not of my doing I must add. I now have my dear, dear chookie and I am wondering what course of action to take to dispose of her body. She passed late last night bless her. I am in the U.K. are there any restrictions.... do I have to take her to the vet to dispose of? Any advice or help you can give would really be appreciated. I need to deal with this asap, for my benefit as well as the health and hygiene probs. Thank you.

You could call the vet and see about your options. I will probably just bury mine (mine are for pets and eggs) here in the US, but my friend just throws hers away if they die like that. But she also uses hers for meat and eggs, hers are not pets.

Thanks for the quick reply CCDMom. I phoned the vet and took her there. I did reply to you on my phone yesterday, but obviously it didn't work. Anyway, thanks again for such a quick response.

Sorry but what are the symptoms of death from shock in chickens? As I have had a hen die recently but I am unsure if she died from stress, shock or water in her lungs?

Sorry for your loss Wild--Star. Not really too sure the real answer to your question. My little girl had a nasty shock - as did all the other chickens, but she was a different stock to the others. She started by not acting as she normally would. She didn't follow me to the shed for supper, and then I noticed she had laboured breathing, very laboured breathing. So I made her up a bed indoors after a long cuddle, and put her down for the night (it was late afternoon that all this started) and then a few hours later she flapped her wings and passed away. So it was the laboured breathing that alerted me. I am fairly new to this backyard chicken keeping and can only summise the reasons, whys and wherefores. I hope that helps nd I hope you don't/haven't suffered any other loss.
