Hi all! I live in Central/East London and have always wanted chickens, so when we finally got a garden in December last year I immediately got a coop and put my name down for some rescue chickens, former commercial caged hens. Picked them up yesterday and they seem to be settling in even though they will never have seen the sun before. Just three, all Rhode Island Reds, named Enid, Elvis and Egg. They're already laying :)

I'm only going to let them wander the garden when I or someone else is there due to some enormous tomcats that prow the gardens, but I work from home so that's a reasonable amount of time anyway.

I've ordered jumpers for them because they're missing lots of feathers. I've also given them camomile tea (they loved it) and am making them porrage tomorrow (made from their own mash). Spoilt? They deserve it!

Lots of helpful advice on these forums - thanks to those who run it. :)

Your girls must feel like they have gone to heaven, lol. How nice of you to give them a caring home and that they are paying their "rent" with eggs.

Thanks for joining us!

Wonderful that you took these girls in, they will certainly bloom with your loving care. Thank you and Welcome to Backyard chickens.

Hi and welcome to BYC - you have some great advice already so I'll just say hello!

All the best

Hi Sam,
I'm also new to chickens and in your neck of the woods, I'm in walthamstow.
I saw your posting in the UK thread, sorry about your fox attack. How is Elvis doing? I have been waging war on our foxes for the last 6 months but have so far not had any losses. I built a run yesterday have left the house today, hoping they won't have found a way in by the time I'm home.
Anyway I just wanted to introduce myself to a local member, let me know if there is anything I can help with.

Sorry, I didn't see this before! Elvis is fine and has new friends now, plus a new coop/ Hope yours are doing well. Lots of foxes in our neck of the woods.

Hi Sam, glad Elvis is recovered. Certainly are allot of foxes around. I had one near disaster where a fox dug under my coop, only a small hole though, I think one of my chickens must have given it a hard time before it could finish the job, I've seen her getting very aggressive to foxes through the wire a few times. One of my sultans got out of the hole and was erg distressed, trying to get back with it's flock by the time I came home. No harm done though, and I've reinforced. Right now I have more trouble with cockerels than foxes!
