Coop Brooding vs Indoor

Blooie may not be around. You'll need to make the cave as big as your heating pad, be sure it will be low enough that they can easily touch the top with their backs in a semi crouched position. (sloping sides so that they can adjust their heat level by the contact with the pad.) The brooder it'self should be big enough that they can have at least 1 sq. foot per bird, and increase in size by the time they are 2 weeks old. At that age, they have flight feathers and need plenty of room to flit around.

Yep, Blooie was bobbing around in the ocean enjoying a cruise! Just got home yesterday and am now trying to play catch up.

So, my new babies are brooding in the coop with no ability to leave their brooder, but today I saw them acting like they wanted to get out to interact with the bigger chicks. Any suggestions on when I should make them a hole to use to go in and out of their safe zone?

The older chicks are merely watching them, no aggresion shown.

It depends on how old these chicks are and how long they've been brooding along side the other chicks. If they're at least two weeks old, and they've been brooding next to the others for that long, then by all means open the portals and let them have access. They will learn very quickly, but supervise them at first and keep the portals open for just a short while at first until you see they know how to use them okay. Supervise their access for a few days until you know how everyone is going to behave with one another before you leave them to roam at will without you being there.

Well today I did my first supervised visitation of chicks with existing flock and after a rocky few min of the rooster telling them to stay in their pen and me telling the rooster to leave them alone we had a good time of everyone ignoring one another before I decided I was ready to be done hanging out in the barn lol :) babies are 2 1/2 weeks old.
