Do you use leg bands on your chickens?

I was considering getting some, as I am going to be adding to my chicks over the next few weeks.. and I'd like to be able to tell ages apart and also if I decide to try to tell certain ones within a breed apart....

What are the best ones to use?

I like bandettes. I use them for my exhibition birds to tell them apart and keep records. I like bandettes because I can reuse them if I sell a bird. I also use permanent bands on my exhibition pullets. You can get several different sizes of bandettes. Start with the smallest and exchange as bird grows.

I've found that the bands become dirty to such an extent that they are rendered useless, but my birds free range so that doesn't help to keep them clean for sure.

Can you post a picture or link to the ones you are referring to? Please excuse my ignorance. I'm trying.

And @CTKen, what about the plastic spiral ones? They seem like they would hold up better than the rubbery ones... but I do not know.

the ones i tried were the plastic spiral ones. Guess they would be fine with an occasional wipe with a damp cloth - not on my list of priorities though.

I do a lot of cross breeding to produce pullets that lay eggs of all colors. I use colored zip ties to keep the chicks identified. I add colored plastic beads so I can tell what month they were hatched.

I use a pair of nail clippers to clip off the extra length after the zip tie has been put on the leg. Be sure to check the zip ties each week so the bands don't become too tight.

These are the ones I use, you can see it on my modern, I mostly use it for my brahmas but you can't see them because the feathers cover it up

I found dog clipper work the best because blunt end so I don't accidentally nick a little chick. I use zip ties at hatch but am ordering bandettes for day old chicks
