My 10 mos GLW has been laying in nesting box, kinda limp and "cooing" x couple days, so I put her in wire cage yesterday am and checked on her later and saw she laid an egg on wire. She was resting on roost not anywhere near the egg.
So is she broody or not?? I feel bad if she was just trying to get the egg out and I jumped the gun and put her in the cage. Do I leave her there just in case...she really doesn't appear mind the cage at all...not like my 1st broody a few mos ago who hated it!!
I told my husband that I didn't think a "true" broody will lay because of the hormones being whacked out. Or am I wrong?? TIA

Often hens will lay a last egg the day after brooding starts. Let her out of the cage and see what happens. If she is going broody she will return to her original nest.

In my experience, the real acid test of a commitment to being broody is the hen staying in a nest as opposed to the roost overnight. After a couple of nights in the nest, I know that she's ready to sit, and as nchls says, they are likely to lay an egg or two before brooding begins.
