Hi everyone, I'm Mandi a mom of 4 kiddos (15, 14, 4 and 2).
After years of talking about getting chickens again my hubby surprised me Sunday and told me he had ordered me a coop for Mother's Day. Yesterday we went to a local Farm and Garden store and came home with 8 precious little chicks. It's so fun having chickens again.

We had 12 back about 12 years ago when we lived in Alabama. But we ended up moving to NC and my Brother in law took our chickens and raised them instead. Our neighborhood here had a covenant that wouldn't allow "offensive animals". Well that covenant expired over 5 years ago and we've been talking about getting some chickens ever since.

The nice older man at the Farm and Garden store helped me pick some out and then I just let my 4 kids choose. We ended up with 2 Barred Rocks (my favorites so far they are so funny!), 2 Production Reds, 1 Amber Link, 1 Black Australorp, 1 Brown Leghorn and 1 little yellow chick that even the guy at the store wasn't sure what it was. However my youngest had picked it out and wouldn't change her mind just so momma could know what I was buying. lol

So far they seem to be doing well. One of the Production Reds (Babette) has Pasty Butt. So I'm trying to deal with that and hoping that all 8 make it.

I look forward to getting to know everyone!

Thanks! I'm hoping she will be ok.

I've soaked her bottom and cleaned her all up (and dried her). Felt like I had a chicken spa in my kitchen this morning. lol
So far no signs of anything. I'm keeping an eye on her though and checking all of the others. So far so good.

Hi Mandi, how fun for you & your family to get chicks! Once you get the little one with the pasty butt cleaned up, you can put a dab of Vaseline on her butt to keep it from sticking again.

Have the kids named their chicks yet?

Yes, we've managed to name them all. We are having so much fun with them. I don't remember our other chickens having this much personality. :) Here's some pictures with their names.

Barred Rock - Emily (Gilmore)

Barred Rock - Violet (Lady Grantham) - Violet is a bit pushy and our smallest girl.

Red Production - Babette - This is the one who had Pasty Butt. All seems well now though.

Production Red- Molly (Weasley) -

My 2 year old's Chicken. She has named her Minnie Mouse and is calling her Minnie. I think she is a Amber Links.

My 15 year old son's Chicken. A Australorp named Meg. She is such a sweetie!!

Our 4 year old's Chicken. She named her Sarah. At first she was going to call her Duck but then she changed her mind. Her favorite cartoon is a show called Sarah and Duck from the UK. About a little girl and her pet Duck. We have no clue what breed this chicken is.

Brown Leghorn - My 14 year old daughter's chicken. She has named her Elizabeth and is calling her Lizzie. Lizzie so far like to be higher then all the other chicks. We put some sticks in their box for them to climb on and the only one interested in them is Lizzie.

Cute names, nice to have everyone having so much fun with them!
