Info:
I am raising 4 chickens for a school project. They have been very gentle, nice, and did not show too much aggression. (My Americana has actually shown a little aggression as she/he will try to start fight I think) I am no expert so my hens may have a rooster upon the group. Two hens recently started laying eggs.

My problem:
I came home today to find a wound on the neck of my Rhode Island Red. Her feathers are all torn off in this particular spot and it looks like she's been attacked. I have no idea what may have happened because I did not notice this yesterday. My parents believe the Americana is a rooster. People have said its because the Americana is attacking my Rhode Island Red because he wants to mate. The Rhode Island Red has been acting normal and I do not see any feathers in their coop.

Is this the reason why she is hurt?
Has anyone else experienced this?
What should I do?

Thank you.

Hi,

I am not an expert but I do not think your americana is a male. Can you post pics of the Americana showing the side and saddle feathers. I personally do not see the pointy feathers in the pic that would indicate male.

I also think if it were from mating the injury would be more toward the top of the head just behind the comb.
Have you seen any mating behavior?

In case you are not sure what part of the chicken we need to see better pics of this link will take you to a thread that has very good details of what shows male feathering.

I hope the link helps and that others also post thoughts on the missing feathers.
