Should I start with all my chicks together

Hey guys. I'm new to the chicken life and have been trying to educate myself before I become a chicken mama. I would like to start with a good amount of laying hens . I would like to see 12-15 hens. Don't want to spend more then $30 to maintain monthly. My question is. Should I get all my chick together . Or stager them. I want to lessen stress when transitioning them to coop. Is that best practices?

My advice would be to raise them all at once to avoid initial conflict that goes with introducing.

Some might say that larger broods of chicks have less of a chance of turning out friendly, but I have to say that my experiences don't exactly line up with that. As a matter of fact, our most loving groups of chicks have consisted of 16-27 babies, while the most hateful were 5-6 birds.

Welcome! If you are planning on starting with hens, it is easier if they all come from the same place. Otherwise there is an introduction period tat is recommended. Good luck and feel free to ask questions!

Whilst i am unaware of feed prices in the States, $30 per month as a max food bill seems quite low for some many chickens (when they are adults, at least). I'd suggest further reading on that issue. I have 15 chickens and they eat around 8-9 kg per week.

I have no idea what it would cost to feed them but, if it is too much, you could scale back the number of birds you want. It's better to get them all at the same time - and around the same age - if they grow up together they generally do better than if you have young birds, you want to introduce to established ones.
 
Ok thank you that is what I thought. But if I get day olds from two different places they still need to get intergrated slowly?

I would think as long as the chicks were healthy, you could mix 2 groups of 1-day olds ok.

What breeds are you getting?

Right now, we have a brooder full of chicks that range in age from 1 to 3 weeks, are a mix of bantams and large fowl, and are from three different sources. Everybody lives in harmony, believe it or not!
