hi, i have been wanting a pet duck for a very long time and finally have my parents talked into it! my question is, does a male or female make a better pet? for now it will stay in the house (its a baby yet) but when its older is it okay to have it in a pen with our chickens or will i need to build a seperate area? it is a baby malard duck.

                                             Thanks

Welcome to BYC.  Generally hens ducks are better pets than drakes.  Drakes tend to be hormone driven and for that reason can become aggressive and should not be kept with chicken hens.

If you plan on housing it outside I suggest you get it a friend. Ducks are a flock animal and don't do well on their own. This will be especially true if it bonds really closely to you. When you leave to go to school, work, etc it will get extremely stressed. My ducks start panicking when separated by the fence of their run (when one misses the door and goes the wrong way).
