I just got 8 new chicks. And one of them seems to breathing harder than the others. I noticed this morning that her vent was cover and I took care to clean her off and inspected her vent which doesn't seem injured. These two problems may be unrelated. But her labored breathing has me concerned.

How warm is your brooder temperature? Make sure that it is 90 degrees for the first week with a cooler spot to escape to. Use a thermometer on the floor in the warmest spot. Pasty butt can be common and a sign of dehydration. Make sure that the chick is drinking well, and adding electolytes such as SaveAChick or a 1/4 tsp of sugar to a cup of tepid water. Dip it's beak often, and make sure it isn't overheated.

The brooder is between 92-95 with a cooler side. I've been making sure it's drinking but seems to be fading fast. I just checked her again and her vent was covered again. I cleaned her again. I'm so sad. However I have her seperated to insure that the other healthy chicks stay that way. Thanks for the response.
