I just picked up six 3-4 day old chicks yesterday that look to be some type of sex link. I really wanted easter eggers but the store did not have any so I called up another local feed store and I was lucky enough to have found a couple. Over the phone the lady told me they were about a week and a half old so I sent my father to pick them up while he was in town. Turns out, these girls seem much bigger! I put them into the brooder with the others. One of my easter eggers seems fine but the other is very stand offish and inactive. Could it just be shock or fear? Or should I be concerned about something more serious?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Introduced older chicks to younger chicks
I wouldn't be too worried. When mixing completely different breeds, the chicks tend to be timid, stand offish, and scared at first. This is pretty common in my experience, and isn't anything to worry about. However, if this behavior keeps up that's when I would start the worrying. Give it a week or so, see how the chick does, then go from there. Keep a close eye on the chick, make sure no one is picking on each other, and if you do notice bleeding, act fast. One small little drop of blood could lead to death very quickly. All chickens are drawn to blood, and once they see it they will not stop pecking until that chick is dead. Pretty harsh stuff, but that's just the chick/chickens instincts. Hope all of this info/advice helps!! Best of luck to you and your chicks!
