When are chicks ok around mice?

We have a mouse problem. We live on a farm and the mice are inevitable. No matter how many traps we set or precautions we take, we have mice! We've kept our newly hatched chicks in the bathroom where the mice haven't been a problem. However, they're 3 weeks old and we've moved them into a larger brooder that doesn't fit as well in the bathroom. We want to move them to the basement where the cats and dog can't torment them (it also has good ventilation and sunlight, despite being partially underground!), but that's where the mice live. I know that mice can eat chicken food and that chickens sometimes eat mice, but at what point should I be more worried about the chickens eating the mice than the mice harming the chicks?

Obviously, we've already put the bag of food where the mice can't get to it. But we've put the chicks in a large dog crate that, although the chicks can't get out of, but the mice certainly could get into. I know that rats can eat chickens and I'm probably picturing a scinario where a giant mouse eats one of my baby chicks that really doesn't happen in real life, but I'm concerned!

make the brooder out of hardware cloth. mice will chew the feathers on adult chickens while they sleep. place the feed and water in the center of the brooder where the mice can' reach thru the mesh. .maybe put the brooder on a table with metal legs the mice can't climb. think of the brooder as a bird feeder you want to keep squirrels and mice out of, smile.

Thanks, that helped. I never thought about the mice getting in when they were sleeping and them not waking up! I've left them where they are for now, but I've added some cardboard walls around them. Definitely going to put up some mesh when I do move them, though! Thinking about leaving some food and mouse traps around the brooder to deter them from going closer...
