I know theres 10 thousand fermented feed threads but i never saw the info im about to ask about. I mixed 3 cups feed with water over top temp here in south alabama been high 70s low 80s. I put mix in plastic ice cream bucket put towel over top and we had a temp drop into high 50s so i put a heat lamp over the bucket to get it goin. Is this gonna work this way im just using artificial heat basically.
 
Should be fine. Will take a little longer for the ferment to start naturally (instead of jumpstarting it with a more concentrated source of bacteria/yeast), but it should start.
 
Fermenting anything is easy ... try getting something to NOT ferment! That's when you need all the sanitizers, soaps, bleaches, etc.

Fermenting is Nature's Way. Keeping things sanitary is Our Way.

Back in the old days, they used to ferment beer using whatever stuff was in the air (that they didn't even know existed.)
 
Yeah i got it goin now im just trying to get the right consistency i guess. They wouldnt touch it this morning it was a little runny added some dry feed thickened it up they pecked around at it but werent crazy over it. Left a bunch in the dish i tossed it out this evening added some fresh to the dish they pecked at it some but nothing major. Im putting out 3 cups for 5 small pullets maybe im still putting to much out.
 
Ok. Im gonna keep offering it mainly because ive read several posts about it making their poop not smell as bad. I live in a neighborhood and try to cut odor every way i can.

Mine like it pretty thick? Enough so that when I scoop it out, it stays mostly in scoop-form. Probably because it diesn't stick to their beaks as much. The liquid mostly sinks to the bottom of the bucket, so I scoop out the top 2/3 to feed then stir the new feed and water in with the slop at the bottom. I use two buckets and make to stir both up when I feed twice daily so the unfed one gets re-moistened and oxygenated.

When I first introduce new foods like that, it helps if I sprinkle known treats on top to get them to investigate. Especially sesame or flax seeds since they'll dig for those! The pan is polished clean now without adding anything.
 
I'm guessing you're feeding too much. Cut the amount in 1/2, then add more when the feed dish is empty. No need to supplement heat. Once your ferment is going, it should be fine in your climate.
 
I think i got it down now i set out some fresh yeaterday evening and all 5 jumped in and attacked it hardly any left so im figuring out about a cup and a half a day is all they eat.
