So I have three hens! A red star, black star, and a EE. The red star already started laying large light brown eggs. I've never heard her sing! She's a quiet egg layer I guess which is good! So my EE hasn't started laying yet and I was in the kitchen and I hear "bawk bawk BAWWWK!!" I ran outside thinking they were getting attacked or something and it was my EE! I've never heard her vocal like that! I was like shush! Lol I'm in a residential area and she is going to blow our cover! Lol is that the typical egg song?? Will she start laying soon? She's VERY flighty so I can't even see if she will squat for me. I hope her egg song isn't early in the morning!!

Likely it was. I have a few that will carry on and on encouraging a flock mate in the laying.

Mine (29 of them) tend to start the racket about 7:30 in the morning. Folks have complained about my dog barking at a fox in the alley but not about any of the hens........yet.

If you are undercover that may be different. If you can keep them locked in the coop until after they lay it will be less loud. They wont be as happy but they will not be as noticed.

Hens can be very noisy.....not just roosters, but at least hens rarely yakyakyak at night, just during the day.

I've had a coupe that spent days, most the day long, squawking up a storm....then stop.
It comes and goes, but quite the cacophony.

Likely, yes. My true Ameracaunas, which are closely related to EE's are VERY loud and they have a VERRRY undignified eggsong. Sounds like a cross between a goose and a peacock scream.

Oh my, this is a perfect description of our two EE's egg song...not only is it undignified, but in our case it goes on and on and on! It's very loud and while we are not undercover, we are in the city and I do sometimes start to worry someone will complain (hasn't happened yet). Our EE both also like to join in if anyone else starts up the egg song...including neighboring coops...like several houses (or blocks) away.

Oh well. Gotta love those blue eggs.

Yeah mine can go on for a good while. We are also in the city (not undercover). Sometimes all it takes is for one of mine to just see someone else go in the box and they all start screaming. Oy.

My HOA paper work said that dogs cats and birds are only allowed at a MAXIUM of 5 and they have to be caged, no roosters are Guinea hens allowed. So does this mean I'm allowed my hens? They didn't say poultry they said 5 BIRDS in cages- sooo am I ok?? If my neighbors complain can I still get fined or eventually have to get rid of the hens

There's the final answer.

If it say 'no roosters' specifically, then I would assume they are including poultry.....not sure if guinea are considered poultry, but I think so.

I agree with aart.
Even where I live and am allowed "as many as can be properly housed and cared for without creating a health hazard or nuisance" if someone complains I could be forced to remove the birds from the property. It all comes down to what is seen as a nuisance in the end. Roosters and guinea are specifically mentioned in the ordinance here as banned. Hens are listed specifically as allowed. Your rules are a bit vague as the do not specifically allow hens but do ban roosters and guinea.

I know you have the cart before the horse in your situation and you may not want to trigger someone looking in your yard for birds but........ there may be a way to gently inquire if one needs specific approval from the HOA to have chickens.
