Just wanted to say hi, this forum has been very helpful in answering all my questions from previously answered posts. I'm from the Independence MO area, and so excited to start! Have myself 6 barred rock chicks, they are about 5 days old now and a lot of fun to interact with. I do have a question though, I haven't started the coop yet... when should it be finished before they are just about ready to be let out there? Thanks!

Most people move their chicks out of the brooder between 5 and 6 weeks of age. Barred rocks! That's an awesome chicken breed. My barred rock Doodlie (see my profile header) is my oldest hen at 4 years of age. She is still laying regularly and is the queen of the coop! :)
 
Hi and welcome to BYC - glad that you have joined us.

I'd say building your coop ASAP is the best idea - no point in having to rush it, and do a bad job. The Coop section has lots of inspiration. If I have one word of caution, it's to make sure that your coop can accommodate a lot more chickens that you plan for. Chicken maths is a terrible affliction.

Joining your state / country thread will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area, which can be helpful.

Those cute little chicks grow quickly so I'd get started as soon as possible.

You will love those BR's they are personality plus and dependable layers.

@CTKen has given you the best advice, get your plans inaction, those babies grow up so fast and will be ready to move out to their permanent home in 5-6 weeks. Coop/runs take longer to finalize than we expect.

And do build larger than you think. I started with 6 chicks in a 5x10 foot all in one coop/ run - and by the time those little gals were grown realized they needed a lot more space.

It is easier and less stressful on the flock to build before they move in -
