After looking at the Coops at TSC and other various online retailers, then speaking to others and reading on here... i decided against a prefab coop.... So I researched on BYC and found the Wichita Coop and Plans.

Starting to build a coop for 6 chickens. Own no chickens right now, figured i would get the coop built at my leisure before i purchase them.

Started prepping the area for the coop.

It will face south/southwest.

it will be 5X12 and be based off the Wichita Coop design.

Super boring pic, but the project is underway.

A very, very good decision.

The Witchita is a pretty nice design...coop space is still a bit tight, depending on climate.
But I think design is easily modifiable to make it larger if you have the skills.
Might want to think about that....chicken math and all, as well as extra space for integrating new birds.

Welcome to BYC!!

Thanks all!

Got some supplies and did some leveling today. My boys (2 and 4) didn't give me any naps today, so time was short.

So far all all I night was pavers and 2x4, the rest is "recycled"

Note: there chicken wire will go under ground to prevent coyote, raccoons and red fox (all have seen in my trail cameras)

What would you recommend for coop size? 5/6 birds is my plan. I dont see ever going over that, but I want them to be comfy.

The standard plan is 5x10, and I increased it two feet. Should I increase the width by another foot also? And make it 6X12?

Remember, don't use chicken-wire if your goal is to keep predators out. Chicken wire is only for keeping chickens in. The animals you noted would chew right through it, or at least could reach through and grab a chicken.

Go with hardware cloth if you can.

I got the chicken wire for free and will double it up for UNDER the coop/run and use hardware cloth for all above dirt level protection
