Their feathers are coming on strong but I noiced one of my Black Sex Links has a bald spot on its neck today. Is it normal to see bald spots in between loosing the fuzz and getting the feathers or is something wrong? They are eating Started Grower non medicated food. Temp stays between 85-90 and they are inside out of the weather. No one is acting sick everyone is very lively.
2 week old chicks with bald spots?
They kinda remind me of gangly teenagers at this point lol Glad to know they are alright poor little buggers look a bit pitiful right now with both fluff and new feathers.
My 3 week old black sex link also has two bald spots (near the top of her wings), and some very scraggly looking feathers. I think it's just an awkward stage. Although she's had scraggly feathers since she was just a few days old and was never as fluffy looking as the other chicks. Hopefully her big girl feathers fill in the bald spots. :)
Yours are just entering what my wife calls the vulture stage. They can get really rough looking when they are losing their down and their feathers are growing in. They’ll probably look a lot worse in another week. But somewhere around four to five weeks when they become fully feathered they will look really nice and sleek.
X 2 - there comes a stage (more quickly than most expect the first time with chicks) when the phrase, "Only a mother could love them" is quite fitting -- the shedding of down and emergence of feathers is not always all that well coordinated.
