My poor dude has had what we think is a stroke and although he seems interested in food and water, he isn't able to eat it. My husband and I know that we need to be humane and understand his quality of life and neither of us want to watch him starve to death, but we are wimps. My hubby has PTSD and I know letting him cull him is going to mess him up so I'm looking for a good humane way to help my guy out without crying my eyes out. Which I am doing already. I wish I knew someone close that could help.

Do you have any friends who are hunters, farmers, or who have that type of experience? If done properly, cutting the jugular or dislocation of the neck is pretty quick and humane.

I don't envy you at all.....I don't think I could do it either. How long has he been this way? Can he walk? Does he have any deficits, like one sided weakness, dragging a wing, etc? I've heard of turkeys occasionally getting the neurological form of mareks disease, but that seems to have a grim outlook. If it's a stroke, I have also heard of chickens recovering from strokes after being nursed along for awhile (feeding and watering them by hand or with an eye dropper). I am far from an expert on these issues, but thought I'd throw a few ideas out there.

So sorry. Can you take hm to a vet for euthanasia? Maybe your local animal shelter will do it?

First off, thanks for all your kind words. Secondly, my hubby just finally did it because he couldn't justify letting him live like that. Our boy had an episode like this the middle of summer the year before last. But after a couple days, he did better. This time. He couldn't move his beak well, could pick up food but not get it into his mouth. Tried feeding him soft food and got it into his mouth but he just sat there with it in there. He would make the motions of drinking water but not getting much down his throat.

Hard thing to do. I'm going to start getting a list together for contingencies. Neither my hubby or I can go through that again. Yes, I'm a total wimp. These featherbutts are my babies.

RIP Buttercup
