I want to purchase sand for my chicken run, I live in Florida, close to Jacksonville. What kind of sand would be appropriate for the chickens. All I know is the sand for pool filters and sand boxes. Is there a particular sand that I should be aware of. Appreciate all of your answers.

Hopefully a more experienced member will respond, but i am planning on using washed construction sand for my coop. It's more course than play sand and doesn't have any potential toxins in it.

Any regular sand should be fine. The construction sand (also called landscaper's sand) tends to be a little less expensive and you can buy it by the yard instead of in individual bags...something to consider if your run is large.

I too am new to owning chickens, and I chose sand for my coop. Not once have a regretted that decision. I have a cat litter scoop hung on the wall in the coop and every morning it only takes me a few minutes to clean up from the night before! I used the deep litter method when I first got my chicks and for the first 5 weeks.. I hated it!! Too much work to clean it out, the whole thing had to be emptied. Enjoy!

If you buy bagged construction sand from Home Depot and see any broken bags, the clerk a couple of weeks ago said they would take 50% off. Thought might be worth an ask. I was pretty excited!
