I just picked up five 1 week old Burbon Red poults. Ita kind of hard to see in the pic becuase of the screen over the brooder, but i think I have 3 hens and 2 jakes or 3 jakes and 2 hens and. There is a clear difference in the colloring on the back of their necks.

Sorry, the difference in coloring has absolutely no meaning in determining sex of Bourbon Reds at that age.

Thanks for that :) I just gave them a good look over and two of the five have wider snoods than the other three. As a matter of fact the 2 with the wider snoods are the ones with a distinct line of where the color stops and turns to white almost like a stripe on the back of their neck. Maybe the wider snoods and stripe are good indications of Jake vs hen? IDK - time will tell forsure though.

Well all 5 of my burbon red poults are growing like weeds and are now 19 to 21 days old (staggered hatch) they are good looking chicks. I like watching them in the brooder. Amazingly they are very well behaved too. I think in a couple of weeks they will be out of the brooder and in the fenced in yard that's if the weather cooperates, if not I will have to get a bigger tub to continue brooding them in. I wished I knew what sex they are but time will tell on that one.

Thanks - I cleaned out their brooder yesterday and flipped each one upside down all 5 tucked their feet next to their backs not one extended even one leg. So I may have 5 hens - IDK... Time will tell... I didn't do the neck/head thing - I'm a pretty big guy so I didn't want to take a chance hurting the little poults.

Pic of my burbon red turkeys @ right around 30 days old. They have just about gotten all their feathers now. I had to get a bigger brooder for them (50 gallon stacker tote from Walmart). I suspect they will be out of the brooder and in the fenced in chicken yard by the weekend.

For turkeys they are way different from the broad breasted i grew over the last few years. They don't eat and drink near as much and they are quite and timid - I've not heard them make a sound in a week or so. I can tell for sure these are solitary type birds and have survival instincts whereas the broad breasted lacked both of these qualities. I'm really thinking these may do well free ranging the property.

I'm still not sure what sexes I have though. I hope I have a mix of hens and toms but time will tell for sure.

I started on the turkey lean-to. I have 13 jumbo Cornish cross roos they get the bottom my turkeys get the main floor. I have all the plywood panels cut. I just need to put in a new fenced in turkey yard and divide my existing chicken yard for the jumbo Cornish Cross roos then I'll be ready to move it in to the new turkey yard.

It's 4x8 and sits 2' off the ground, the turkey main floor is 4' high sloping down to 3' high. I put a 2x4-8 roost bar in there that's 21" off the floor. I made 16x20" doors on each side but only one will be used for now.

Well they are out of the brooder and seem to like their new digs. I still need to put poultry netting over the top of and electric fence around there new 10x30 fenced in yard. Then they can have green grass under their feet.

I sure wished I knew what sexes they are forsure but I'll just have to wait to be sure.
