Blooie's Blankie Fort

The one in my clutch that died in the shell was a maran. Poor little thing. Good luck with your hatch, hope it all goes smoothly.
Sorry about the DIS, it's never fun. I always worry that if I had just checked on the remaining eggs sooner, I might have saved them, I try to be hands off hatcher.

Thanks, it was my one and only hatch, I knew (and still know) nothing. I left it to my girls to handle it and they handled it beautifully. The shell was broken open, I think one of the girls might have pecked at it instead of the baby trying to get out, I really don't know what happened. I didn't know anything about helping, what I'd read was to leave them alone because they can bleed if you start "interfering". If I ever hatch again, I'll know a little bit more and perhaps be able to intervene if it's necessary, but I'm in the suburbs so I can't be overrun with chickens and am unlikely to hatch more in the short term.

I'm in the city too. I have 13 properties that touch mine. I'm overrun and not zoned for chickens, so I know i need to cut back and sell what I have before I hatch more. But I have so much fun hatching. Not so much selling.

It'd be so easy to become a "crazy chicken lady". I remember my sister-in-law's auntie had a lot of chickens and all her neighbours complained about them (she lived in quite an affluent suburb). I go a bit overboard with my pets, but stop from going completely mad with them. Hatching more would be mad and I'm too much of a worrywart to trust strangers to look after the babies and let them go to other homes LOL

I'm going to be incubating my first flock soon, does anyone have any advice? I will be incubating silver dorkings for a friend and leghorns and sussexs for me.
