When do you name your chickens?

Those of you who give them personal names, that is. At what stage of their lives do your birds get christened with a name?

We don't use age. My wife names them when I decide they are "keepers". Sometimes as soon as the chick hatches, but most, when they are older; 4 to 6 weeks of age.

We normally name our chickens right away. However the chickens we know our "keepers" (which is usually pretty soon after we get them) get more personable names. The ones we aren't sure if we are keeping get named usually after their breed, such as a Buckeye might just be named "Buckeye".

We typically don't name our birds. I go out there and holler 'Chickies!' and they all come running.
But the ones we DO name, it all depends. One hen was 14 years old before she had a more defining name (it was Molly btw lol), another one was named 'Homie' because she is always around my feet and insists on being carried whenever she sees me. Our roo got the name 'Big' because he happened to be the biggest rooster we had a couple years ago. :)

We name them as soon as we can tell them apart, so some get names immediately and others take a few weeks. This year's chicks are four weeks old and 9 have individual names, while the 10th is currently known as "the other one" lol. We have a mixed flock so it's relatively easy to tell them apart, but there's at least two of each variety. Last year we had four ISA browns and could tell them apart by the end of the second week.

We named our chickens after we discovered something about their personality, but alter it so it sounds nice. "Tricky's" name is Hermoine after the Harry Potter character, Mattie, rather than "Maddie" because she is always pecking the others, Honey because she is so sweet, etc. lol

That's what I do. I wait and see if something distinctive shows up then use that characteristic or feature to choose a fitting name. However I'm toying with a new idea for the Americanas* I'm getting though; wait until they start laying, then giving each hen a name that would reflect what color egg she lays.

*Yes, I know that most people here call them Easter Eggers or just "EE's". But I like the name Americana better (at least I'm using the right spelling for the "breed" (and I also know they're not really a breed :) )).

Hey, I just noticed: I've "just hatched"!

I name my chicks/chickens when I can recognize them among my thirty some chickens. My favorite was a Light Brahma I named Bijou, French for Jewel. She was so sweet, she would walk up to me let me hold her for a while, and even jump on my lap! She disappeared last year, in my area if a chicken is missing for 48 hours she is declared dead.

I miss her so much.

Yeah, it can be a real bummer to lose a beloved bird. i remember when one of my ducks hatched an ALL black crested duckling! I loved that little bird, so you could imagine how p***** I was when my landlady's son's dog got into the pen and killed it. we got a few crested ducks in later hatchings, but never another black one.

That sounds nice, I would be interested in hearing the names you give them. We only have 5 chickens, which were sold as RIR, but are really Production Reds, but love them. All their eggs are the same color so that would be a problem naming them. lol This is the first time we have ever had chickens and we are really enjoying them ... so entertaining, and eggs are very nice. I never knew there were so many different kinds of chickens until I joined BYC. Guess with Americana's the eggs are all different colors, which would be pretty. Yesterday we got a miniature egg from one of ours and it was really a shock.

Also, sorry to hear about your duckling.
