Every time I go into the backyard I'm instantly mobbed by our little flock. They all come running from across the yard once I'm spotted and follow me where ever I go. We currently have 21 hens and 1 rooster. They are fed layer pellets every morning. They get 1/4 lb per chicken per day minimum as they get another scoop in the afternoon because we're suckers and worry that they're hungry. They get a treat each afternoon also, ranges from veg, rice, yogurt, fruit, etc. They are also completely free range all day so there is a constant buffet of grass and bugs available to them.
Does anyone have an opinion or expertise in determining if they are indeed hungry or just little pigs?

Well, of course they come running up to you! You feed them!

Also, don't discount their curiosity. You are the most interesting thing they ever see. They love gossiping, and you give them plenty to gossip about.

I doubt I'm more interesting than a new bug found or flying ants. Oh they love jumping for flying ants. It's a hoot to watch young ones discovering new food. The sight of me is just a dinner bell to the usual sun flower seed and table scraps. Chickens are so easy to train with treats. You'll see a lot of posts of people over treating birds then asking how they can make them less aggressive. It's funny to me. Birds tugging on your pant leg hoping for treats to fall out is not aggression. Might be a sign to cut back on treats though. I can visually see the disappointment on the birds as they come running then start to realize I'm not carrying anything. Slow down to trot then stop and look at one another only to walk back to where ever they were scratching about before.
