Hey I am new to raising chicks and wanted to know how old they should be before I give them treats and what types of treats to start them out on. I currently have 4 two week olds and 2 one week old barred rock and austrolorp mix. Any information would be great thanks!

The only things I personally offer is some greens like dandelion, clumps of sod or spinach. I don't add many extra stuff until they get a bit older, usually after 8 weeks. If you do offer anything else be sure to give them some grit made for chicks, or I use parakeet grit.

In careful moderation, I offer treats in the first week along with sand for grit. If you buy grit, be careful it doesn't contain calcium as some grit may that's sold for other bird species.

I emphasize moderation because it's more crucial that chicks get a balanced diet that their starter crumbles provide and they aren't eating more treats that spoil their appetite for their real food.

I offer live meal worms, crickets, moths, a lettuce leaf, watermelon, papaya, sod with tender, non-reedy grass growing in it, very small amounts of grated cheese, etc. You should not take everything off this list and feed it to chicks. This is a sampling of things you can offer in very, very small amounts only occasionally.

My 2 week olds got treats for the first time yesterday. They got finely diced garlic, habenero, dill, and cilantro. They've had grit available for a week now, but I wanted to make sure everyone was over their various stresses (they all came from farm stores) before treats were introduced.
