Thinking my Black Australorps aren't really Australorps...

I have been wanting Black Australorps from the get-go. Our first round of chicks consisted of 2 Rhode Island Reds and 2 Plymouth Rock Barred...sadly, we lost my favorite red to a coyote. This year we ordered 2 Black Australorps from Ideal Poultry and I couldn't be more excited! But...they are about 9 weeks old now and the older they get, the more convinced I am that the hatchery sent us the wrong breed. They are not solid black, but rather black and white checkered (mostly black) like Dominiques or Plymouth Rocks. Anyone have any experience with this? I keep hoping they will change but I think that is just my inner optimist shining through. :(

That's what I was afraid of. Looks like I struck out on the Australorps this time around. Not looking like I'm going to have much luck talking the BF into more chicks either. :(
Thanks for the pics!

Ur welcome. There hasn't been much difference in the personality of either that I've noticed. One of our barred rocks will peck at you when you try to pick her up, but the other two are pretty sweet birds. The black austrolorps weren't as timid at first tho, they would come right up to you.

Mine seem to have bad attitudes. LOL. It seems my first set of barred rocks were much more easy going and personable.

I agree with kwcoop...looks like someone goofed at the nursery. It might be too late to get some sort of refund but they should at least be told about it so they'll be more careful.

If it's any consolation to you, my BR's have been way nicer than the BA's I had. I finally had to rehome the BA's because they were so horrible to the other chickens (not everyone's experience with them, but it was mine). My BR's were kind of timid for a long time but the older they get, the friendlier they become. They'll be 2 years old next month and I'd choose them over the BA any day.

That's definitely contrary to what I've heard about most BA's but I know everyone has their own personality! Hopefully mine will mellow out as they get a little older. I just don't remember my other BR's being that way. These are just so stubborn and stand-offish. :(

Thanks for the input!! :)
