Hello,

So I have a friend getting 6 Polish crested (straight run) but she already has 2 roosters (and like 15 hens) so she said if she gets any roosters she has to get rid of them, and me being duck and chicken crazy volunteered to take a rooster if she gets any. Now that's all swell except for the fact that I currently have 6 chicks of my own two are silkies and four are Golden sexlinks, the silkies are however straight run so I was wondering even though it is very much not recommended could I have two roosters if I also added another hen?

Thank you

The polish roosters I have had, hadn't be too great of roosters, they mostly would mate a lot and make trouble, and we finally culled them. As far as how many roosters you could keep, there's the recommended rate, but then you need to factor in the individual roosters and how they are with the hens. I wouldn't try it if you aren't willing to separate them out or cull out birds if things don't work out.

If the hens start too act distressed and stuff I'll remove a rooster. Maybe if I'm lucky both of my silkies will end up being hens but I doubt that seeing as how they are already developing very differently.

There's always too many roosters.

Hahaha! I take it you're not a fan of roosters?
No, I adore roosters, I have three large and 11 bantam, and have a couple more coming with my order, I keep squeezing them in, but eventually someone has to go, I don't like that part, so it's best to not get too many, but sometimes I can't help it.

Ahh. Understandable. For me I think it's partly just that people tend to dislike roosters because they can be a pain in the but sometimes, quite literally. Which I guess being stubborn I like to purposely get animals that hasn't had the best of reps and prove that they are great. Haha I guess I'm a bit of a weirdo. But I love roosters anyways.

Weirdos are good, they make life interesting, I'm a fellow weirdo. My roosters ignore me, they know I'm head chicken. I don't tolerate human aggressive roosters, though I have only had one in the past 20 years. He was the spawn of Satan, a little black frizzle Cochin bantam, who was soft to the touch but pure evil inside, he made kung fu noises and launched an attack every time he saw me, eventually I couldn't take it no more and he had to go. Still feel bad through.

I agree weirdos are good! I get the whole kung fu satan rooster, my parents had chickens before I was born and my dad said that one of his roosters was so horrible that he started taking the metal garbage can lid to take care of the chickens so that he was prepared for war with Rambo (the rooster was Rambo). Finally after a couple years my dad gave it to a family friends farm and after about a week at the farm my dad was visiting and asked where Rambo was and the guy who owns the farm said, "he was the worst toaster ever, but a mighty fine dinner." Hahaha serves the little bugger right.

You called him a toaster, sometimes I love autocorrect. Rambo the toaster.
