I'm really wondering what the dark brown hen is. for the last year I assumed she was a welsummer except for the fact that she doesn't lay dark brown eggs.

That is a Partridge Rock.

Note that not all birds which are supposed to lay dark eggs will, if they are hatchery stock. In this particular case the bird is indeed not actually a breed which produces dark eggs, but many hatchery Welsummers, Marans, and Barnevelders lay eggs only a few shades darker than a regularl brown egg and few (in some cases none) will produce a truly dark brown/red or chocolate egg.

Ahh thanks for the insight. She was a buy from the feed store near my place, mixed with a few other variety and not listed by breed. But looking at other pictures online of partridge rocks she looks identical. Thanks again!

Absolutely! I understand the whole feed store confusion. I went last spring and bought some chicks, and the breed was not listed either. I asked an employee what kind are they, he said " they are pullets", I then said "I know they are pullets, however what kind/breed? He looked at me like I was crazy, and said " I just told you, they are pullets".
After that I learned to not expect too much by way of insight from them.

Lol seriously, now my primary purchases for chicks comes from a place called "sea breeze hens" out of San Leon, Tx. The lady seems very passionate about her chickens and tends to get some hard to find breeds

... Reason #375 why feed stores drive me nuts...
