But I had a very good friend who Ruined canned tuna for me. IN a good way. Her husband owned a sport fishing boat Every once and a while hed bring home about two hundred pounder off the drag lines. One Christmas they Home Canned their own tuna in half pint jars and gave them out as Gifts.... packed in Good olive oil with herbs or peppers or thinly sliced lemon and garlic........
There is no comparison...
Just like @BBQJOE
and his preference in Salmon.... Unfortunately for me Salmon here is more expensive than beef... I am squeeking by sneaking the canned stuff in.
Any thing can taste good if you do the right stuff to it... Except for mountain oysters.... Yeah...
Havent tried mountain Oysters yet... But I have tried Fries with Eyes.... by accident. They were pretty good....
There is a Sushi Restaurant I frequent. The family that runs it are Thai. He learned his sushi skills at a big Japanese restaurant in Los Angeles. His English isnt the best... One day I aksed if he had Flying Fish Roe... its called Topeko or some variation. After some discussion his face lighted up and he says OH yes I have that.. So he speaks to the waitress who runs back to give the order to the kitchen.
I had a sneaking feeling I wasnt getting Flying Fish roe .... and I was determined that what ever came out I was going to rave over it. About fifteen minutes later a plate that looked like it had french fries on it came out. Along with a little Bowl of Ponzu sauce... she set them down between my son and I. INside the lightly battered coating I could see fish about the size of a french fry Whole... Eyes and all... and I am so certain all the innards were there too. I smiled and dipped one in the sauce and ate the first one head first.... to get rid of those eyes.
It tasted Nutty fishy too but in a good way. I raved and my son raved over them and he just beamed.
Later I spoke to his wife who Speaks English Very well. Come to find out those little fish were his favorite snack food he kept in the back for his break. She said they live in the streams in Thailand. I have ordered them since but only a couple times more.
I recognized the species too.... a Type of Goby
