Hi, I've never owned a chicken or any livestock but we live on 2 acres and are allowed horses, chickens etc. I have an 8000 gal or so pond with goldfish that are under threat from a heron, and I was hoping I could bring in a protective rooster that could chase a heron off. I would protect them overnight and let them out in the AM, thats no problem. I imagine a goose would be better but I feel maybe I'd be more comfortable starting with chickens.

There are coyotes in the area as well as foxes. I also have a ringtail fox around. So a secured overnight warm coop will be necessary. This time of year I get red tailed hawks. Again a large aggressive rooster or two or three seem like good protection. What do you ya'll think?

Thanks!

Kevin

Roosters don't just attack random birds. Some don't even acknowledge the fact their there. And a Heron has a pretty big beak and I don't think will give in too easy, chickens are not stupid.I have ducks and they accept any water bird that is at the pond.I suppose geese will be just as accpetable so your best chance is to run hi off,or shoo him.

So something like a goose wouldnt attack an intruder like a heron? Seems strange to me. They attack anything that gets in their realm, from what I've read.
