Best time to transition chicks to Adult feeder?

I have 6 spring chicks that range in age from 4 weeks to 6 weeks in the brooder right now and I was wondering when the best time to move them over to an adult feeder would be, hopefully before I get them out in the coop/run in the next couple weeks.

I currently have two quart size chick feeders in with them and I find myself filling them up to twice a day. I doubt they're eating 4 quarts of feed a day but they sure do seem to be wasting it, even though I have it elevated by about 3" so they can't scratch it. I'm also supplementing them with veggies, tables scraps and hand cut lawn clippings (My 3 yr son's favorite chore.)

While I don't mind filling their feeders so often, I'd prefer not to have them waste so much of it. When's a good time to move them from their baby feeders to an adult sized feeder? Can I just drop it in there and hope they get it, or should I transition them over to it slowly?

I'm a first time chicken mom and really have no idea what I'm doing but I seem to be doing ok so far, at least I think so.

Thanks for taking some time to help me out!!

Chick mothering is fun! :)
You could easily put the adult feeder in there, they will figure it out really fast. They are plenty old enough and chicks are extremely curious. They will realize it's the same thing you've been giving them. Just swap the feeders out, and put the new feeder in the exact same place as the last one.

I sometimes even start my chicks with an adult feeder. They usually figure it out no matter what.
Awesome! Thank you Mirajane!! Sounds like I'll be getting everything moved around and re-situated this weekend when I clean out the brooder so I can fit thier big girl feeder in there!

Great! Chickens are pretty easy to care for, but there are SO many questions that come up! Feel free to ask anyone about anything, or even PM me! Good luck on your chickventure!

Unless you are staying cold during the day and night, they are getting cold because they are getting too much heat.

i.e.: all our chicks over 3 weeks are outside, just about to start moving 2 week olds outside also. Once they're outside, they feather exponentially faster than in the brooder. Seriously, it's crazy.

Never underestimate a chicken's ability to get food and water. As long as they can physically access or actuate an adult feeder, they are ready.
