I have a Light Sussex cockerel called Jeremy. I hatched some purebred Light Sussex eggs out but two came out brown. I was thinking he might be crossed. I also think he's got a lot of black for a Light Sussex. I might be wrong but just wanted to be sure!

That's a Light Sussex alright. The lack of white lace around all the neck feathers makes him appear he's more black but it's right coloration for the breed. Has the right legs and body type too. He's just not a supreme example. Show quality parents don't often throw show quality chicks. Standard breeding takes a lot of hatchings and selection to get down to a few breeders. Like one sire and two or three females form 100 chicks. If done in this way the offspring become more uniform and the entire flock moves closer to standard of perfection but even this way you have few show quality birds.

All that said, it doesn't sound like you purchased from a very good breeder. There are those that have pure bred birds and don't select much for breeding. Going for numbers of hatching eggs to sell. It's like a puppy mill in that you don't get the best quality even though "pure bred". It's best to know your source of eggs. Read reviews on them or if here at BYC can read the threads they are in to get an idea of how they breed, see photos of stock, etc. then purhase eggs with confidence.
