Thanks for all the information!! One thing I'm worried about
Deep litter method has to be dry? Where the run is It will be able to be rained on since it's under my deck. Now knowing that, what is my best solution?

There was recently a thread about this, people seem to use the terms 'deep bedding' and 'deep litter' as well as other terms universally...

There are two distinctly different practices...

In one people use a deep layer lot of 'dry' matter that dries out the poop and mechanically breaks down over time, this must be kept dry as there is no biological break down...

Others use a deep layer of organic materials that are not kept 'dry' this allow the littler to become a cool compost pile, where the organisms break down the poop biologically...

For an outside run you are going to want to aim towards the one that biologically breaks down since you can't keep it dry, but at the same type you don't want it to stay wet, it's a balance act...

Also both methods will require the bedding to be fluffed, mixed and what not, usually chickens will do this for you but sometimes you will have to pick up when they slack off...

What you don't want in either case is for it to 'cake' up, it should never look like or be a layer of compacted poop, it should look like compost or litter...

This is what it looks like in my coop, this litter is over a year old, I have only added more organic matter never cleaned it out... It doesn't stink when working properly and in my case it is actually composting and generating heat...
