Do they need a heat lamp?

Do my baby chicks need a heat lamp if they are starting to grow feathers? One of my chicks have featherd wings and starting to get tail feathers, the other one has about 1/4 of feathers on its wings

How old are they?

Sounds like they're around two weeks old. Yes, they need heat to warm themselves under. It needs to be around 75 to 85 F under the heat lamp, and cooler everywhere else.

Okay, how do I know when to turn off the heat lamp?

At least 3 often 4 weeks

As your chicks grow in their feathers, they will gradually need less heat, until around five weeks, you can remove the light.

A lot depends on how warm your climate is. It helps when you fill out your profile, then we know where you live and what temperatures you're dealing with to better advise you.

I live on the Central Coast of California. Right now, the nights get down to the mid 40s. I've been thinking of putting my 5-week olds outside but am wondering if they'll need extra heat at night.

It depends on the temperature the chicks have been used to. The rule of thumb is to keep exposure to temperature swings to a spread no greater than twenty degrees. For example, if your chicks have been used to an indoor ambient temp of 70F, going to an extreme of 40 is too great.

So what you do is to open a window in the room indoors where you have the chicks, bringing their ambient temp down about ten degrees for a few days, thereby slowly acclimating them to cooler temps.

When you move them into the coop, you can supply minimal heat for them to acclimate them on that end of things, then remove it after a couple nights.

You can see if they need the heat by checking on them after dark and the cool night temps have settled in. If the chicks are huddled under the heat lamp, they still need it, If they're sleeping well away from it, they no longer need heat.
