Are these RIR eggs fertile? They came fresh out of two sperate hens - less than 30 minutes from lay to frypan.

Awesome - I just got this young RIR roo about a month ago - for fertilizing eggs. I have a few other questions if that's OK?

I noticed two of my 17 hens have went broody over the past week and half or so and get pretty aggressive when I take eggs out from underneath them. I would like to leg mark these to hens - what's the best method for leg marking a hen? I was going to use a loose fitting zip tie - is there something better?

Also I want to see if either of these two broody hens will hatch out eggs. I would like to mark the eggs in case another hen decides to lay when the broody is up from the nest. I was thinking of using a sharpie but not sure seeing it's chemicals and all - what is good to mark eggs?

Thanks again

thanks for sharing, I looked at an egg that was laid yesterday with my grand daughters and it was fertile. They loved seeing this. Now I need to figure out how to incubate some.

Let your broody girls do the job. Watching mom and chicks is so special.

Are your hens RIRs too?? If so, you're lucky cause RIRs are bred not to be broody. I think a good majority use the zip strips to leg band, just make sure there's enough room to cut it off if you need to.
People use sharpies all the time, I don't, I use pencil, and with broodies that gets rubbed off A LOT, but there are those that argue sharpies do not hurt the chicks.

The only chickens I have are RIRs. 17 hens a little over 1 year old now and a recent purchased RIR roo about 7 months old.

I'm glad I have two broody hens - I guess I feel lucky to have them now.

was thinking... I might put my two broody hens in large dog creates with hay on the floor, food & water and with 6 fresh layed eggs. See what happens in about 21 days.

This is all new to me...

I havnt started yet I got a mean hen to deal with plucking tail and back feathers out of the other hens. I'm trying to catch her in the act so I can have some mean chicken soup

I have a few hens that are missing neck and back feathers and it's actually the rooster getting aggressive during breeding. He never did that until he got a month or so older. I also have a hen that plucks the feathers out of the hens lower in the pecking order but only when they are in her space.
