Eggs are breaking inside hens prior to laying.  Yes my hens lay large eggs but have been able to lay them in the past. Why now all of a sudden is this happening and 3 in 1 week?????   Lost 3 hens this wk. from this?  What is going on?  I feed fodder I make myself, Raw frozen veggies from garden last yr,,, pellet laying mash, cracked corn, they get plenty of calcium and grit.  I am at a loss.  First time chicken owner & not only are they my egg layers to produce eggs to sell but they are my pets & this is breaking my heart!....have lost 2 Red Sex Links and 1 Buff ....Someone plz help me.    My heart is breaking here and I need help fast.

thanks

I'm new to this too, just wanted to express my sympathy for your loss.  That's horrible!  Hopefully someone with experience will have the answer & I will be following as my hens (4) just started laying.  I want to be prepared for problems, hoping now will transpire.  Again sorry for your loss :(

THANK YOU.  VERY SWEET OF YOU FOR YOUR KIND WORDS.  THIS WEEK I THINK I HAVE CRIED A THOUSAND TEARS.  YES CHICKENS CAN BE A VERY CLOSE PET AS WELL.  AMAZING HOW CLOSE YOU GET TO THEM.  EACH OF MINE HAS A NAME, KNOWS IT AND WILL COME WHEN CALLED.  HAVE RAISED THEM FROM CHICKS UP TO NOW 2YRS OF AGE.  AMAZING HOW TIME FLIES.

FEEL LIKE I KNOW SO MUCH FROM ALL THE READING, STUDYING I HAVE DONE, BUT WHEN SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENS, I FEEL HELPLESS.  I CLEAN THEIR LITTER BOX UNDER ROOSTING POLE EVERYDAY, WALK YARD TO CLEAN POOP PILES UP DAILY, THEY EVEN GET BATHS WHEN NECESSARY, KEEP AROUND VENTS TRIMMED, KEEPS FEATHERS PICKED UP SO NOT TO GET BLOCKED CROPS, PUT LEMONGRASS OIL IN CORNERS OF COOP FOR BUGS, THEY HAVE A DUSTING BOX, I WIPE THINGS DOWN IN COOP WITH WHITE VINEGAR TO KEEP CLEAN, EVEN HAVE PLASTIC LAYING BOXES SO IF EGG BREAKS OR THEY POOP IN BOX IT IS EASIER TO KEEP CLEAN.  I AM PICKED ON BY EVERYONE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND THEY SAY THEY WANT TO BE ONE OF MY CHICKENS....RIGHT NOW DONT THINK THEY WOULD SAY THAT......MY MOTHER TELLS ME I AM TOO PICKY WITH THEM AND THAT IS WHY THINGS ALWAYS HAPPEN TO THEM....,MAYBE SO , BUT I SAY WHAT GOES IN THEIR MOUTH TO EAT IS WHAT COMES OUT VENT IN THE FORM OF AN EGG AND IF I AM GOING TO EAT EGG OR SELL IT, I WANT IT CLEAN AS IT CAN BE AND THE CHICKENS NEED TO BE IN A CLEAN LIVING ENVIRONMENT FOR THAT TO HAPPEN.  YES HARD WORK BUT THEY ARE WORTH IT.  I USE TO HAVE 30 BUT THAT NUMBER IS QUICKLY DROPPING OFF.

AGAIN THANKS FOR YOUR LOVE AND SUPPORT AS A FELLOW CHICKEN OWNER.  GOOD LUCK AS YOURS GROW AND LAY.  HOPE YOU GET LOTS OF EGGS AND NO PROBLEMS LIKE I AM HAVING RIGHT NOW.

REMEMBER FLIES ON POOP CAUSES PARASITES, IF CHICKENS PECK THE POOP, THEN THEY GET THE PARASITE, THAT PARASITE CAN BECOME STUCK TO INTESTINE AND SUCK BLOOD FROM THEM BEFORE YOU KNOW IT IF YOU ARE FIRST TIME OWNER,....REMEMBER TO ALWAYS TREAT FOR FLIES AND PARASITES....#1 KILLER OF YOUR FLOCK....JUST AN FYI ...WHY I TRY TO KEEP THINGS SO CLEAN....BUT IT STILL CAN HAPPEN AND STILL HAVE DANG FLIES NO MATTER WHAT....HATE A FLY!!
