Hello! I purchased a 40 lb. bag of organic chick starter/grower feed for 3 chicks. I am thinking it is too much and wondering how long I should use it? Thanks in advance!:)

Hi,

Its not too much, you will use it. Some estimate your chicks will eat about 10lbs of food EACH in the first 10 weeks.

Some feed brands instruct to feed chick starter for 8 weeks then switch to a lower protein formula. You will have extra you can still feed as you transition over.

Always look at the date on the bag (manufactured date) because it's best to use up the food by the time it's no older than six weeks. Some vitamins loose potency over a fairly short time, and it matters. What kind of chicks? Maybe you just need a few more??? Many breed types will use about two or three pounds of feed per pound of weight gain, so it will get used up pretty fast. Three chicks x six pounds apiece = eighteen pounds of chicken, x three pounds of feed = 54 pounds of feed for the group, but while Cornishx birds will get there in six to eight weeks, others take much longer. Don't worry about it just use it until it's gone it won't hurt them feeding chick starter longer in life, it could be fed their whole life if you wanted to as long as you supplement calcium

Thank you so much! And I currently have two ameraucanas and one buff orprington. I am thinking its probably best if i get another chick.
