In the Brooder
2 have hatched. the one mentioned above has a small bulge by its belly, like a belly button. premature, I think. normal? it's just laying while the other chick tramples all over it

Yup, the belly is often big because it absorbed the yolk. I have this theory I'm testing this year. The Cobb's development chart states that the chick normally absorbs yolk day 19/20. We all know that sometimes it happens later and sometimes they don't finish before hatch. I've had chicks with small bellies and big bellies. My theory is the smaller the belly the longer the yolk has been absorbed and I want to see if there is a relationship to how fast they start eating once in the brooder. If the smaller bellied chicks take to the food faster because they yolk is already deplinishing.Yep. looks like a navel. big belly normal too?
