Hello! I'm new to raising chickens and am so excited to be getting our coop and run ready for our chicks! My husband surprised me by building a coop and he made it 2 stories high - intended to have a roosting/living area on each "floor". I'm kind of scratching my head over this, not knowing if chickens will "self select" which coop entrance (and thereby coop) to enter. I believe the base is set on cement and is 4x4x8. It looks like a skinny outhouse! He plans to built nests off of this, but I think he's going to have to add floor space. We have 10 chicks. The run is the good news it's 30x5 and we'll have them out in our yard at times, too.

The real concern is how to make a stacked coop design work. I can't get my head around 2 seperate living spaces or how to manage poop and roosting pit,for instance.

The hubby is a master carpenter so we can modify if need be.
Thank you!

Can you post pictures - sounds like an interesting design.

I hope you'll take lots of pictures and write up your coop build experience. I'd like to see the finished product.

Maybe you could accidentally on purpose, show your husband the coops section - so he could get an idea of what the average chicken likes to come home to.

Hi and welcome to BYC - glad to have you join us.

I hope your experiment works out - do let us know!

This is the beginning of it. For 7-10 chickens. I think we'll have to add lateral space, but if anyone has ideas for how to use space (what goes where) in a double decker coop I'd love any advice! Thank you.

I imagine the chicks will house together in the lower coop, so I think your hunch on needing to expand out is a good start. It would probably be more practical and use a similar footprint worth of space that the ladder/ramp system you'd likely need to get them to use the top portion. The top may not be a total loss (your chickens could use it I guess, or you could possibly add pigeons or such)...
