I'm brand new to black sumatras, yesterday a man offered me a pair of black sumatras if I promised to keep the bloodline in order and help conserve the breed. I was SO HAPPY, I had looked for Black Sumatras but could y find any for sale on Crjagslist. The way I plan to conserve the bloodline is every two generations of chicks, replace with a new rooster, probobly from him. Is that a good plan? I also plan on selling some of the hens once my flock grows, what is the ussual market price? What reasonable? Nobody near me sells Black Sumatras and the man I got them from said he doesn't sell, and said he doesn't care if I do. Should I register my flock (once established)? And if I should registerer my flock, with who? There is so many different places to register. Will it give me any benefit to atract buyers?

Hi,
I recently started with black Sumatras too! I was wondering if you have any chicks. I have many chicks that I already hatched. I would like to see your parent stock.

Replacing the rooster from the same line is redundant. That contributes to inbreeding and makes for weaker chicks.

The pair picture above are BOTH from totally different lines of chickens, and the person I recived these from has two lines 3 lines going. And these are my parent stock.(above)

This little guy was the only one of 8 eggs that hatched in the 9 days I collected them, we had a power outage that lasted 7 hours one day and I didn't have anyway of heated the incubator. I consider him lucky to have hatched.

If you plan to breed to the SOP then yes you should absolutely go back to him and get birds from the same line to put with yours. Bringing in a different line is not recommended. Thats why he said keep the bloodline pure. Mixing different strains in any breed is not recommended. Thru careful selection you can limit inbreeding. Inbreeding in chickens is not a bad thing. All top breeders have birds from one "family" that has stayed pure. If at all possible go back to him and let him mentor you. Let him help with your selection of the offspring to use as future breeders. As far as registration goes, no you shouldnt register them and as far as i know there is no official registration in poultry.
