Pine shavings bedding soaked

Thread Starter
My brooder has pine shavings in it. I went to check on the chicks, and they're fine, but some of the bedding is soaked. I don't know if it's from the waterer, but it's such a mess. Did this ever happen to anyone? Is it bad?

Probably from the waterer. Damp bedding is bad for chicks and encourages bad bacteria and smells, so you need to remove the wet shavings and put in dry ones. Make sure your waterer is slightly elevated (maybe on a few boards) and that it's level to prevent it from leaking.

We had the same problem in the brooder, those plastic wateres they sell for chicks are messy. It leaks easily especially if it's tilted on straw or shavings. Try setting it on a thin block of wood to stabilize it.

Try putting a flipped.over saucer in the brooder level then put the waterer on that. The waterer is tilting. Make sure to put the waterer hole pointed to the way the water is highest in the tray

There are lots of options of how to get a handle on the water with ducklings. Wet shavings is going to lead to a stinky brooder very quickly.

Or ignore that since I didn't realize I wasn't in ducks reading this.

I don't use shavings with my chicks. I use towels the first week or so and then swap to sand. Waterer goes up on a patio paver/stone
