I ordered 4 ducks that will be coming in middle of May. I was curious if I could also raise a chicken or 2 with them? My coop is 5x7 and the run will be 20x2 totally fenced in and roof covered. Will hey be able to survive together?

I don't know for sure since I have never done this, but my neighbor does. She seems to raise them together and put them out into her pen. She has a wonderful set up, I would say like a 30x50 foot pen ( I don't know for sure maybe bigger?) and she has to coops and houses in there. There is a pond and the puts the chickens and ducks together. They seem happy. I'm pretty jealous of her setup!

Yes - I've done it. You just need a water solution as ducks need deeper water and will make a mess of it. I elevated it over a pan and used a cut-out milk jug. You'll have to clean it often.

So she has two seperate coops inside the run?
It looks like she has two small sheds. I never actually went over there to look at them. I admire them from far

. But she literally has maybe like 20 ducks and many more chickens. She also has geese. I can't imagine she actually separates them in the sheds.

I know ducks make a mess. I had them many years ago. But what do I need to do different for the chickens?

You really don't need to worry (unless you have too many drakes). After raising- birds of a feather usually flock together. Chickens don't like the muddy mess, but they will tolerate most anything. The question is how much you want to put up with (I hate muddy eggs). I would make a pen for the ducks. The chickens will check it out every day for bugs, but they will roost at night and leave the ducks alone.

I have made a 5x7 coop with a pointed roof. Was going to have the water and food on one end and other end for sleeping. Have wood shavings on the ground. I figured with the 4 ducks either get one or two chickens. Not sure yet? And would I need to put a wooden rod across the top for the chicken to sleep on?

Yeah I will use a 2x4 for them to perch on then above that have a piece of plywood for them to sleep on and my eggs hats off the floor and away from the ducks
