I'll start with the ones I at least have a guess on. The picture below is of a chick from Atwoods. The store closest to me orders from Ideal. My guess is Barred Cochin because of the pattern and the feathers growing on the legs.

On the next I really have no idea except it is of the bantam variety an also from Atwoods.

Again no idea except it is a bantam from Atwoods which means it was ordered from Ideal.

This last is one I also have no idea on. It also is a bantam from Ideal by way of Atwoods.

This last one does look a great deal like the Cherry Eggers I just bought. Except for the dark back.

Yes, I know, I'll get a better idea once the adult plumage is in. But, I just can't leave a puzzle alone. I guess I will just have to be have patience on the gender.

Any ideas are welcome.

These are all the possible bantam breeds from ideal :
Brahmas, Cochins, Cornish, Dutch, Frizzles, Japanese Bantams, OEGB, Sebrights, Silkies, Wyandottes, D'Uccles, D'Anvers.

Your first chick is either a brahma or a Cochin and I would guess Cochin based on the feather pattern.

The second chick may be an Old English Game Bird.

I'm not sure yet about the others but I think you can eliminate Sebrights from the list (unless one of the chicks is really tiny), Silkies because none of them seem to have silkies feathers, Brahmas because none of the others have feathered feet, Frizzled because none seem Frizzled, D'Uccles for the same reason as Brahmas.

I'm not sure about the third, you will have to wait and see.

Thanks,

I am wondering how many breeds have grey or green on their legs.

The picture below is why I am wondering.

The legs are showing as a little darker than they are but not by much. Still clueless on gender.

Cochins are supposed to have heavily feathered legs. I wonder if the first chick is a cuckoo Marans, some hatcheries do carry the feather legged version. Second pic look like an OEGB.
Third chick could also be OEGB (blue). I'd guess four is probably a D'Anvers.

Its pretty common for blue birds to have slate colored legs. Whatever you've got there, they're real cute!

Thanks for the input. I enjoy these kinds of guessing games and puzzles. I took pictures of those barred Cochins or Marens, which ever they may be. The color is kind of hazy in this picture but that isn't really my question they seem to almost certainly be barred.

And then the third. This one is noticably smaller and more docile. Just as active as the other two though.

I do not know if there is enough detail to answer the hen or rooster question yet. Three weeks is rather young for that from what I understand.

Not quite a week later but more pictures anyway. These birds are now almost 4 weeks old.

First, the black and white ones.

As you might be able to tell from the picture at this size... one bird is smaller than the others as well as less disturbed by handling. The one that was looking my direction is starting to get a little pink in the comb but it is slight.

My 3 week old Cherry Eggers are shown on another thread.

The next is one of my bantams. It has been suggested that it is an Old English Game Bird. No comb growth at all.

Here is another bantam. It has been suggested that this one is a Gray Old English Game Bird. Again no comb growth or color change that I have noticed.

Here is the third bantam. Possibly a D'Anver. Again no noticable differance in the comb. Also very difficult to get a good close up.

and another of the same bantam. Top view to show the pretty colors.

Any more input on the breeds here?

Back again,

These are all about 5 weeks old.

I'm wondering if the possible D'Anvers chick might be a young cockerel. The red shows up much better at some angles.

1

These two may be OEGB both are bantams. Not even a hint of pink in comb or wattles for either.

2 3

These three are? When I first saw the feathers I was thinking barred of some type. Some feathers on the legs. Cochin? Someone suggested they are Marens. Any input is appreciated. the first and second are starting to get some color in their combs but nothing in terms of wattles yet. The third is still smaller as well as the patterning seeming different. Also, there is no new color at all in the comb or wattles.

4 5 6

Any input on breed or gender is appreciated. Yes, I know, time will tell....

I'm pretty certain that #1 isn't a d'anvers as they should have a rose comb, beard and muffs. Perhaps he is a black tailed buff Japanese? Does look rather roosterish to me.
#2 I wouldn't like to guess gender on
#3 looks girly (but 5 weeks is a little early to be sure)
The barred birds I have no idea, I know that marans (if that is what they are) can get quite large combs early on though.

Thanks,

All of these are only about 5 to 5 1/2 weeks old if that helps any. All of these birds came from the Ideal Hatchery. With a short time spent in the local Atwoods store. That particular chick is also a bantam.

I've often heard that hatchery birds are basicly pet quality. But, that is a good way to see if raising birds at least from chick to near adulthood is something I want to do or not. So far I am enjoying the experience immensly.

Thanks again,

Lisa

Back again,

I am still wondering about this bantam. Male/female? Breed? Anyway here are a couple of pictures. This bird is now about 11 weeks old.

Updates on the others later. Any ideas on this one?

Thanks,

Lisa
