6 chicks hogging heat plate from another:(

HI everyone! We have 6 buff orpington chicks- they are three weeks old. I have a premier one heat plate. When I went to buy some stuff at the feed store, they had one barred rock that had been returned by the owner because she had taken one with a broken leg and this one wouldn't leave it alone. So it's the same age as mine. It's a little smaller, because mine are fat pigs

, but not too much so. They were a little standoffish with her at first and pecked at her a little. She is very healthy-eating, drinking, trying to socialize- she is a SUCH a love. But when they go under the heat plate, they don't let her get all the way under. I'm worried that tonite they shove her out and she'll freeze:( The temp in our garage where our brooder is is probably 50-55.

Should I go out and make a mama heating pad? Or do you think she will be ok?

 
Well first of all that is not a barred rock--its an Easter Egger. Also, this chick is not 3 weeks old--probably a little closer to 1 1/2-2 weeks old. The age difference could explain why your older chicks haven't accepted her yet. I've successfully integrated several-day old chicks with 3 week olds--you need to monitor them closely though.
When it's dark in the garage tonight, the chicks will not know whether or not she is under the heating plate--chickens don't have very good night vision. So as long as your plate is big enough for all the chicks, I wouldn't worry too much. I would go out there in the evenings after it's gotten dark just to make sure she is under there and if she is not, put her underneath the plate for the night.

REALLY? How does the feed store make a mistake like that? Ugh!!!!!

Your chick has little muffs and green legs, which indicate an Easter Egger (here's one that looks similar to yours--they come in all different colors):
 
well, she sure is a sweet little thing. I hope everything turns out ok.... I'm still toying with the idea of getting a heating pad.

I used a heating pad with my last batch of chicks and it worked great. Don't know if an additional heat source would prevent the older chicks from bullying the new one. Hope it all works out for you! Be watching for pretty colored eggs in 5 months or so

She's under there snuggling with 2 of my smaller buffs while the other ones are sitting on top. LOL! She's pretty bold, seems to be just fine now.....
