Questions on Pekins

Thank you Miss Lydia. It's 3:1 guys:gal. We chase them off of her and I'm planning on ordering several more hens (if that's the correct term). Or, it's time to try duck for dinner

. Guess we'll go buy a pen or chase them into their stall.

Would you happen to know how we should proceed about her eggs. She began laying in the same place each day and is up to 17 eggs. Still not sitting. Should we try to hatch them or toss them away?

She may not ever go broody some just have had it bred out of them. You just never know from one duck to the next. Why not toss them this time unless you know oldest from newest. Then we she begins again mark them with magic marker or something similar you can use date or how ever you want to mark but that way you can always take oldest out and keep newest in in case she does decide to brood. and you'll have some for eating too.

You have to decide how you want to get this under control either selling or eating extra drakes or getting more females And keeping the boys separated till you decide. You could try letting a drake at a time with her and see how that goes maybe one day on one off and if they still abuse her even if just one on one then keep them separated. Duck sex is rough anyway but when they gang up and the girls start losing feather and get injuries it's time to put on the brakes.

Thank you so much. It's all great advice. These are the first to make it this old. We had a bobcat that just defied any type of control. Only one who made it was a little mallard and she got lonely and flew away.

It's always something that wants to eat our flock so it's up to us to make sure they are secure and safe. Sounds like you have worked it out now I hope so. We sure can't ever let our guard down. I love my drakes as much as my females but man they can sure try our patience.

We've been keeping at least 2 drakes penned for a week now. Daisy (guess we are all Donald Duck fans) is happier and her neck is healing; although they tend to hang out near the penned guys. Ordering another dozen hens. We do love our kids.
I need to see if there is a guinea thread. Raised some last year and I just adore these silly birds.
