Why wire Instead of Eggs on Perforated Shelf Liner?

Do eggs need air circulation underneath them or might my eggs on perforated shelf liner on tile work? Second timer hatching. Using ceramic tile (heat sink) under shelf liner (soft and spongey.) I use 2 quarts of water (heat sink) and one bulb running all the time and one on a digital thermostat. Computer fan and styro chest. Here is my setup. I plan on putting up a chick guard before the hatch.

The eggs don't really need air circulation under them. As long as the incubator has enough air exchange everything should be fine.

Whew! Thanks cmfarm, I keep seeing all these plans for homebuilt incubators and wondering why everyone works with hardware cloth. I'm thin skinned and wanted to avoid working with wire. I have been thinking about using thrift store or dollar store plastic baskets to protect the chicks when they hatch but putting eggs down on soft perforated shelf liner for the first 17 days. I'll give this next batch on shelf a try and see how things go.
