Hen Not Pooping!

Help please!

I have a hen that had sticky bottom that I had not noticed. She probably had it for at least 2 days. I unclogged her and kept an eye on her, she is not pooping and is eating very little. I grabbed her and felt her abdomen it felt very full. I am afraid that there might be an egg stuck in her vent but I have not checked yet.

Please help!

Can you feel an egg inside her vent?

Give her a soak in a warm epsom salt bath. You can offer her some liquid calcium or a tums.

Hydration is very important, so see if she will at least drink for you.

Does the abdomen feel like it's full of liquid, hard or squishy?

I gave her a bath to wash the poop off her bottom. She will not let me touch her abdomen for very long, so i don't know about an egg but it feels very hard. Her vent is very small, but see is still laying. She has been pooping but very small amounts, they are mostly liquid. She ate and drank very little.

Can you take her to a vet?

If her abdomen is swollen/hard she may have something like Peritonitis, Ascites or other internal laying condition.

You can try to give her a boost with vitamins.

You may want to isolate her is you haven't done so, put her in a warm quiet area so she can relax and you can monitor her water/ food intake.

I have isolated her and am monitoring her. I don't think that there is an egg in her abdomen, all I felt was a hard, kinda like a sausage to the right os her vent. A little blood came out when I removed my finger.

How far in did you feel?

Did you use lubricant?

Does she seem like she is standing like a penguin, is she straining to either poop or lay an egg?

Did she lay an egg today?

I felt about the length of my pinky finger.

I used coconut oil as a lubricant.

She is not standing like a penguin, and she does not seem to be straining to poop, she had not played ant eggs for some time.

I tried to drain her and I did not get much out, but when I stopped she released a poop that was much larger than the squirts that she usually does.

I'm assuming you have her separated so you can monitor her.

Offer her some wet food (wet some layer pellets), scrambled / hard boiled egg, or tuna and see if she will eat well for you.

Make sure she has grit and you may also want to add some poultry vitamins to her water.

I have separated her, I am feeding her wet layer pellets and mealworms. She is eating and drinking less and less...
