FBCM Crowing

I have 2 rooster black copper marans that were born Dec. 25 of 2015. Was wondering when they should start crowing?

The line of FBCM (French Black Copper Marans, for those following along and not familiar with abbrev) that I used to have was very quiet. The hen I still have left is very quiet, but is not at the bottom of the pecking order, so it's not a dominance issue necessarily.

Cockerels' first crowing can start at 6-ish weeks (I had a golden campine that was very early at crowing), but many of the standard breeds start around 12-14 weeks. Of course, there are a lot of different results. Yours are due, but don't be surprised if it takes them longer.

Also, if they are part of a flock that has other adult males in it, you may only rarely hear them crow. The top cock will crow much more than all others because he's dominant. The 2nd guy down the totem pole will also crow, but less than top cock. The 3rd guy won't crow hardly at all. That's usually how it works, but it doesn't always work that way because each chicken is an individual. Btw, the crowing isn't always done for dominance reasons; it's just that the most dominant cock is usually the one to make the comment when necessary when they are all living together in one flock.

Of course, some breeds are more talkative than others. Some cocks are more talkative than others in each breed. And like I mentioned, the line of FBCM that I had was very mellow and didn't feel the need to crow much at all. And yet they weren't pushovers among the other chickens either. I miss them.
