Call Ducks??

Calls are noisy and they are not great layers. We will be clearing out all our Calls this year and just keeping our Australian Spotted ducks, which are not much bigger than Calls. The Khaki Campbells are great layers but they are full sized ducks and we like the bantam ducks that lay chicken sized eggs so we don't have to convert duck eggs to chicken eggs in recipes. The Khaki Campbells are bred for production rather than temperament but they are a popular duck and easy to find at feed stores.

Call ducks are smaller but they make about the same size mess as large ducks. They are easier to move around and find some space for, but for calls if you free range them (which I do not recommend they are way to small) you would need to clip their wings or risk them flying away. Also since call ducks are so small they are more fragile as babies so you do have to be careful, you have to be careful with khakis too, just they can take a small fall better than a call duckling could. Call ducks are also usually seasonal layers.

Khakis lay well, in some cases they can fly but not very well. They brood well, and they lay alot more often than calls.

I loved my Call ducks, but you have to clip their wings or they will fly off. Great little ducks for a compact space. If you have lots of room, go for the khaki's.
